Ages:16-24
The I CAN Get Fit program has been specifically designed to promote physical activity and confidence in youth and young adults with ASD by providing an environment and pace of instruction that meets their unique learning needs. The goal of the program is to provide individuals with ASD the opportunity to access a fitness facility while learning the etiquette, techniques, safety and social factors associated with exercising independently.
The program focuses on specific training components: warm-up/aerobic, core stability, strength training, agility/coordination/balance, stretching, warming up and cooling down. The focus of these activities is on cultivating independence, confidence, social skills, fitness etiquette, building friendships, following directions and taking turns.
The coaches and one-to-one workers adapt the program to the needs of the participants. Some participants may be able to do an exercise for 10 seconds, some 10 minutes; either outcome is acceptable. Mindful alterations help ensure that the program runs smoothly for all enrolled.
There is a visual schedule that is used throughout the lesson to guide the participant. Between every activity there is a team meeting in which focus is brought to the next activity. Each activity is broken down and explained using a white board as a visual aid.
