The I CAN Play Series has been specifically designed to promote the physical and social development of children with autism by providing an environment and pace of instruction that is modified to meet their needs.
The programs give children a place to learn sports skills and socialize with their peers without the fear of acceptance or the worry of competition. It is a chance for them to build new friendships and most importantly participate in sports any typical child would.
Each program consists of a coach, support workers and volunteers, who help provide support for every individual. Pictured symbols are used to represent each activity in order to decrease the anxiety of the participants. The picture symbols are used in the form of a visual schedule at the onset of the lesson, to help display the day’s activities.
The I CAN Play Series also allows opportunities for parents to meet and share stories of similar challenges and triumphs. It is a great time for parents to watch their kids grow in a healthy environment while enjoying a break. The Canucks Autism Network is working hard to bring the I CAN Play Series to every region of the Province.
