Vestibular System

This is the movement and response to gravity system. It tells us if we are moving and in which direction.

An individual who seeks out vestibular input:

  • Is on the go all the time.
  • Will take risks in his play and love to challenge his balance.
  • He may be moving all the time but often he is processing information at the same time because the movement is helping him to think.
  • It is harder for this individual to focus if he is told to be still. This is because the vestibular system is sending messages to the cortex via the arousal system and helping him to focus.

An individual who avoids vestibular input may be afraid to move.

  • He may need to hold onto something or somebody when on uneven ground and does not like to be off balance.
  • He will like to be in control if his own movement and will not like rough and tumble play.
