Auditory System
This is our listening system.
An individual who is overly sensitive to sound:
- Will be unable to block out background noises. Loud, sudden noises are painful to him/her and he/she will cover own ears for protection.
- May not be able to process what the speaker is saying because blocking out sounds around him/her is difficult.
- May have difficulty assigning meaning to sounds because their system processes more slowly than usual or with distortion. Spoken language and/or environmental sounds may be impacted.
- May vary from day to day in their level of sensitivity to sound.
An individual who seeks out sounds:
- Will often make his own sounds.
- Will talk a lot, make sound effects to his play and find ways to make noise with objects.
- May use repetitive talk or sounds
